Turning the Dream Into a Reality

Forrest Bird, member of Palm Springs No. 693, has been recognized for his achievements as a scientist, an inventor, and an aviator. His Bird respirator, introduced to the market in 1956, was the world’s first reliable, mass-produced medical respirator. A pediatric version followed, credited with reducing infant mortality in low birth weight babies by 60 percent. His inventions, which also include the Intrapulmonary Percussive Ventilation device and the first mobile ventilator system, are widely used around the world.

Dr. Bird is a past president of the Civil Aviation Medical Association (CAMA). He was inducted into the U.S. Inventors' Hall of Fame in 1995 and is a 2008 recipient of the Presidential Citizens Medal.
